Summary

This session explores the critical role of land-based finance (LBF) in advancing urban development in African cities. As Africa continues to urbanize rapidly, the need for innovative financing mechanisms is imperative. LBF, a promising tool for generating revenue for infrastructure, housing, and services, offers significant opportunities. The session will highlight successful cases across Africa and discuss challenges, strategies, and best practices. Insights from the African Cities at a Crossroads Background Report will inform the discussion, and ministers from countries leading in LBF reform will share relevant experiences.

Objectives

• Facilitate Networking: Connect stakeholders engaged in land-based finance, land management, and urban development in Africa.
• Leverage Case Studies: Highlight best practices from selected African countries as potential case studies for the State of African Cities Report.
• Disseminate Key Findings: Share outcomes from the African Cities at a Crossroads Background Report, particularly the role of LBF in urban finance.
• Assess Technical Assistance Needs: Demand for technical support on LBF and land management from cities and governments.
• Promote Partnerships: Explore collaboration opportunities with UN-Habitat and other institutions to implement LBF tools.
