Summary

This event is aimed at providing a platform for insightful conversation on the Construction and demolition Waste and the need for Sustainable Waste Management Practices with participants in WUF. The conversation will focus on the critical challenges that NCA intends to address while creating awareness and building consensus with stakeholders at National, regional and international level.

The event will feature a presentation by the National Construction Authority on a research titled “Towards A Circular Economy Model: Assessment of Factors influencing Construction Waste Management Practices in Kenya” in the Financial year 2019/2020. The outcome-driven research culminated into a “National Construction & Demolition Waste Management Strategy and Implementation plan for Kenya” developed in the Financial Year 2022/2023.The implementation of the Strategy is envisaged as a stakeholder-driven process spearheaded by the National Construction Authority and will be executed in conjunction with key industry players.

The strategy serves as an advocacy towards the adoption of a circular economy model in the Construction Industry and is intended to guide players at the upstream level (waste generators), midstream (Recycled CDW) and downstream (recycled CDW users). It serves as a solution to Construction and demolition waste generation which has been identified as a major challenge in both rural and urban centres around the world due to its direct impact on the environment. This challenge manifests more in majority of urban centres in the developing countries as a result of rapid urbanization.

The development of the strategy was anchored on the Kenyan National Solid Waste Management Strategy and will act as a guide for planning, implementing, and monitoring Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste management activities in the construction industry. The successful and effective implementation of this strategy is highly hinged on engagement of stakeholders to spur innovative waste management measures and programs.

Objectives

The objective of the event is to provide a platform for an insightful conversation on advances made toward effective construction and demolition waste management. The event provides an opportunity to take stock of achievements made towards managing construction and demolition waste, a key contribution to the global call on climate action. During this session, the National Construction Authority will share a perspective from Kenya; outcome-based research ‘Towards A Circular Economy Model: Assessment of Factors Influencing Construction Waste Management Practices in Kenya”. The discussion will be centered around key aims that include:
I. To encourage formulation and review of CDW management policies and regulations aimed at providing a progressive legal environment to effectively address CDW.
II. Build the capacity of those involved in regulation and enforcement to effectively engrain the culture of responsibility and accountability among stakeholders in the CDW space.
III. To aid in the acquisition and management of CDW infrastructure. This involves instituting mechanisms that encourage adoption of advanced technology in CDW management.
IV. Leverage innovative financing models such as Public Private Partnerships in CDW management to complement limited resources in urban centres in developing countries.
V. Advocate for appropriate mechanisms to facilitate the review, monitoring, innovation and improvement of the CDW management systems.
