Delivering SDGs In Action Closing the Gap through City-led SDG Delivery Platforms

Since the adoption of the 2030 Agenda, cities have played a central role in localising the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through Voluntary Local Reviews, data systems, and policy alignment. Yet a critical gap persists between SDG reporting and real-world delivery. Many local governments have visibility over challenges, however many lack integrated mechanisms to translate SDG commitments into coordinated action, investment, and measurable improvements for cities and communities. This session introduces City-Led SDG Delivery Platforms, a ‘city operating system’ that enable local governments and communities to move beyond reporting and close the SDG implementation gap. Anchored in SDG 11, the platform positions housing, neighbourhood development, urban services, and climate resilience as core delivery entry points, while simultaneously advancing progress across interconnected SDGs related to poverty reduction, water and sanitation, clean energy, decent work, reduced inequalities, and climate action. Aligned with the UN-Habitat Strategic Plan and its SDG localisation approach across the five domains of governance, society, economy, environment, and culture, the session demonstrates how multi-level collaboration can be translated into actionable, place-based solutions. Through applied city experiences, the session will showcase how SDG Delivery Platforms integrate data, planning, budgeting, project pipelines, partnerships, and community engagement, turns SDGs into tangible outcomes such as safe and affordable housing, resilient infrastructure, inclusive services, and climate-responsive neighbourhoods. Designed as an SDGs in Action event, the session will demonstrate practical solutions, including SDG-aligned delivery frameworks, institutional coordination models, and local project pipelines that are shareable, replicable, and scalable,. It highlights local governments as key delivery agents and communities as co-creators of sustainable urban transformation. Objectives of the session are to: 1. Demonstrate how City-Led SDG Delivery Platforms operationalise the UN-Habitat SDG localisation framework. 2. Show how SDG 11 can act as a backbone for delivering multiple urban transitions simultaneously. 3. Share practical tools and solution pathways that empower local governments and communities to accelerate SDG delivery. 4. Enable replication and scaling of SDG Delivery Platforms through peer learning and partnerships.
