The event “More Than a Roof: How Successful Housing Strategies Transform Lives” offers a renewed perspective on affordable housing as a central lever for social and economic transformation. In a world marked by rapid population growth, increasing pressure on housing access (nearly 3 billion people live in inadequate housing conditions), and accelerated urbanization reaching 58% globally, the challenge is no longer limited to housing production, but to designing holistic, inclusive strategies capable of sustainably improving citizens’ lives. Drawing on Morocco’s innovative direct public support program introduced two years ago and having already benefited over 85,000 people, combined with international experiences across three continents focused on homeownership and rental housing, the event will demonstrate how well-targeted housing policies can generate strong and tangible impacts: improved living conditions, safer living environments, expanded access to urban services, strengthened social cohesion and equity, and environmental responsibility. These successful housing strategies share a common outcome: enhanced financial empowerment, dignity, and urban integration, particularly for vulnerable and low-income households, including women, youth, seniors, and persons with specific needs. They also represent best practices that have successfully reconciled affordability and environmental considerations across diverse cultural, spatial, and climatic contexts. The event will further show that simple, beneficiary-oriented public mechanisms, implemented in coordination with territorial stakeholders, can produce measurable impacts at both household and neighborhood levels. By combining experience sharing, key data, and operational lessons from contextualized housing programs implemented in Morocco and elsewhere (North and Sub-Saharan Africa, Europe, and Asia), the event aims to inspire decision-makers, practitioners, and international partners to rethink housing not as a social cost, but as a strategic investment for more sustainable, inclusive, and prosperous cities.
