Make this your go-to transformative panel on the final morning of WUF13! 8 groups from 5 continents realizing SDGs in informal, homegrown settlements will share real experiences from the ground of what works. From Alemão in Rio to Dharavi in Mumbai.
The event SDG Solutions Born in Informal Settlements will bring together 8 organizations from 6 continents keenly engaged in realizing housing rights via the SDGs in informal settlements. Each will have 6 minutes to present and we will then engage in a lively exchange with audience members. Each organization brings a specific set of tested tools, supportive research and knowledge sets resulting from very close work with grassroots organizations in supporting adequate housing in informal settlements. All have SDG 11 as their focus, but each addresses additional SDGs. urbz will bring adaptive and innovative housing typologies born in homegrown neighborhoods like Dharavi (Mumbai). Raizes em Movimento from Rio de Janeiro will share how residents developed their own community plan, then engaged federal and municipal authorities to implement it. Kounkuey Design Initiative will share programs that have transformed public space in Kenyan informal settlements. Catalytic Communities will present the methodology of Rio de Janeiro's Sustainable Favela Network, representing 400 favelas across 12 themes closely aligned with the SDGs, producing infrastructure build-outs, NbS, trainings, energy justice and the world's first favela climate memory exhibition. Geres will present experiences with heat adaptation in informal housing through owner-driven community-led heat adaptation innovation: community-led design and tailored technical assistance allow residents to lead their own affordable, accessible and culturally appropriate housing adaptation. World Habitat will present informal settlement solutions from “40 Years of the World Habitat Awards". And Center for Sustainable Urban Development, The Climate School, Columbia University will share informal settlement examples from their SDGs Local Learning Studio.
